This Old World Is A New World And A Bold World For Me

In direct conversation with Shuman Basar’s experimental novel The Extreme Self: The Age of You, my collage depicts the reality of the future I envision. The collage portrays the expansive interiority of women who reject the speed of digital expansion and instead make space for their dreams, desires and needs. I utilize a lot of white which symbolizes physical space, empowerment and beginnings and black which acts as the direct contrast to symbolize the digital expansion. I cut out many quotes and words which I believe hone in on this idea of rebuilding and reconstruction: “and this old world is a new world and a bold world for me”, “me and me now” as well as “they told us that the world was ending but they were wrong…we decided to make it burnt and from these ashes we have created a new one” to name a few. Flying beings such as birds and butterflies are used to symbolize the new found freedom and autonomy of the commanding of a new interior reality. In essence, my collage also creates a dialogue of time with the utilization of images that seem worn and new simultaneously. This dialogue of time can also translate to the women embracing and rejecting both girlhood and womanhood; a dialogue of adolescence which is a “new” hybrid reality in and of itself. The collage depicts women who encapsulate softness and allure (lace, tulle and flowers) but are not weak; in fact are exceptionally strong for being completely concerned with themselves and their own interiority.
